Then you can leave all the sound settings alone. Can you confirm that the headphones get plugged into the headphone and not the microphone jack. Headphone jack is the bottom one. Verify if there is a separate volume control for the headphones, may be on the wire itself. Re-enable the speakers from the Windows Utility, once the headphones are selected correctly, built in speakers should mute. Also, when plugging in the headphones, do you get a pop-up from Windows(or sound application) that it found a new device, and offering you a selection between headphones & Speaker Out?
