I was googling about yesterday and came across the site: If you click 'SKY DIGIBOX' on this site you will see they are offering new, unsubsidised PACE SKY PLUS boxes for 275 pounds. I phoned them up yesterday and they confirmed the set-up would be exactly as you describe. In particular they stated at no time would it be necessary to connect the SKY PLUS box to a telephone line. Being slightly paranoid, I have asked someone in the UK to phone up SKY to confirm that this is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. It's a bit on the expensive side - you have to add 50 pounds for the P&P, and a new twin INVACOM from ebay would cost about 50 euros - say about a total of 500 euros. My Sky+ box was activated without being connected to the phone line. When it was done, the first call suggested it might need a callback to be initiated - second call resulted in the recording features being switched on and no callback was required. It's happily running with no phone line and the phone cable is still nicely sealed in its bag. If you have a discounted second sub, they will check that both boxes are connected to the same phone line. I think with full subs, they don't seem to care as much. ![]() Sky plus WITHOUT subscription to Sky. Could be 'hacked' to activate Sky+ functionality without a Sky+ enabled. Do you already have an account? No, create an. You can now pair your viewing card to a new or replacement box on line without having to ring Sky. Simply follow the instructions below. In order to carry out this pairing process, you will require the following details from your box/es: Sky box version number; Sky box serial number; Sky viewing card number; Receiver ID. Jul 11, 2015. Sky boxes can now record without a sky channel subscription, previously £120 a year just enable recording. My bill for the next few months on my account and it's an extra ten pound so I asked them to cancel because I didn't ask for it and they apologised for it and said its a mistake from their side. Activate my channels. Sky customers: Sign in to activate your channels. Not a Sky TV customer? Please contact your Pay TV provider. ![]() ![]() BTW my box was £199 from the local Dixons/Comet/Currys-type place. Sorry to want everything nicely spelt out, but I'm concerned I'll splash out 500 Euros and then be told by SKY I can use the SKY Plus box - just as soon as I connect it to a phone line in the UK (which might be a bit tricky, living in S. Germany as I do). Are you saying, Leee, you had to make 2 calls to SKY? And what exactly is a 'callback'? Is this something the SKY Plus box is supposed to do, or is it something you the customer has to do? Incidentally, I dropped into a big Curry's outside of Southampton at Christmas, and they told me they couldn't sell me a Sky Plus to take away with me. How actually did you manage to get hold of one, Leee? I contacted a dealer in the UK about buying Sky Plus from them last week. They recommended sending my SKY Card to them, so that they could activate it for me. If it didn't work for any reason, then it was agreed I wouldn't go ahead with the purchase. Well, I'm not going ahead with the purchase, and am I'm not going to get Sky Plus. I phoned the dealer this morning to find out how they were getting along, and they told me that Sky were making a lot of difficulties for them to activate the card. They told me that Sky were about to clamp down on 'unauthorised' use of Sky Plus boxes, and that they couldn't recommend that I go ahead with the purchase. So it's back to Plan B: viz buying a gadget called a Phantom PVR, which sits between the Digibox and your video recorder. This device allows you to control the VCR by using the Autoview function of the SKY digibox (which switches automatically to programs you've pre-selected). The gadget picks up a signal from the scart cable when Autoview switches channels, and controls the VCR by sending out the appropriate 'record / stop recording' infra red signals for the VCR. Hardly in the same class as SKY Plus, but it does only cost 30 quid, including postage to Germany, and has been getting good write-ups. @Ian, I have phoned SKY from outside the UK for the best part of four years without any problems: just recently activating a FTV card. Scare stories have been abound since that 'SKY Abroad' website started. Reading that site put the willies up me: like Rupert would knock on my door himself. Don't believe any of it. If you sound like you are in the UK when you phone them (so avoid letting them hear local emergency vehicles wailing in the background ) you should be okay. Another hint: Ignore that website. Don't rehearse ridiculous stories - your wasting your own viewing time: like my old endeavours - 'my mother is partially blind and can't really see the menus, I bought SKY for her so she could listen to Radio 2' (my mother has never listened to Radio2, is not partially blind and, more to the point, doesn't have my digibox). The better/more expensive packages seem to attract a better 'service' experience. Technical Note: whether this is true I don't know - but, it won't harm to do it anyway: leave your Digibox in the ON position and NOT in STANDBY during the activation period. Hope this helps - Have Fun, Mark. I have recently purchased a new SKY+ v2 box and fitted it myself, I live in Norway and when I phoned SKY to get my card married to the new box and activate SKY+ features, I had no problems from SKY. I didn't use any special phone or dialling system, just dialled on my home phone (in Norway), they didn't ask where I was calling from, I told them I didn't have the SKY box connected to my phone line, to which they just pointed out that I couldn't order SKY Box Office movies or use online facilities. Everything was updated within 5 minutes, and SKY+ was sorted. I was worried about ringing SKY after reading all the forums dotted about, but after all that it was relatively painless.:-righton. Sky+ confusion I rang SKY today pretending to be a UK customer thinking of upgrading to Sky+. I have a UK sub. I was told the following; 1. The sky + box is not subsidised. If you want to marry your old card, you ring them but your box will have to call sky centre back. That software downloads are being sent via phone line when sky+ box calls back, guy said last dual recording one was done like that. Is all this true? I thought the software updates were done over air via the satellite itself? If it is, there's no point trying to marry my UK sub to a UK bought sky plus box? Can you get the card married to the Sky+ box and get the Sky+ features activated without phone connection. Was planning to up grade sub too from fam pack as only a few £ more than paying the additional £ 10 for the sky+ features. Suppose i could always threaten to cancel my sub and so the operator loses an upgrade and a sub?? Any advice /thoughts?? No matter who you speak to at SKY or what argument you use you will be told it is impossible to have Sky Plus without being connected to a phone line. I, however, have never found any posting on any forum from anybody who has actually failed to get Sky Plus activated when not connected to a telephone line - everyone has succeeded. Apart from me - but then I decided in the end that not only did I not want SKY Plus, I didn't even want SKY, and have gone the Free2View path instead. I reckon in a couple of years things will be looking very different for SKY. Their UK customer base will be threatened by the explosive growth of Freeview (gaining over 1 million customers a year at the moment). Most popular TV shows and films can be got on DVD (which you can rent over the internet here in Germany, 4 per month for a cost of 10 euros). And of course, DVD writers and hard-disk PVRs are set to fall drastically in price over the next year or so. Can it be long before SKY will be offering SKy Plus as their standard digibox, without any additional charges for its use, and without any absurd requirement for it to be connected to a telephone line? ![]() ![]() Do you have an external hard disk connected to your Windows 8 computer? If you do, you'll want to enable Windows 8's File History tool to protect your data. File History is essentially an update to the Previous Versions feature that was included in Windows 7, which was based on a Windows Server 2003 feature called Volume Shadow Copy. Like Previous Versions, File History continuously monitors files stored in Libraries, Desktop, Contacts, and Favorites folders and when it detects changes in any file, it then makes a backup of that file. Unlike, Previous Versions, File History isn't enabled by default. Fortunately, doing so is a pretty straightforward operation and once enabled, File History's improved user interface makes it much easier to configure and use than its predecessor. In this edition of the, I'll show you how enable File History and then show you how it works. Editor's note:. There have been some feature changes implemented for the current retail version. Subscribe Getting Started Launching File History in Windows 8 is easy. Just press the [Windows] + W to access the Search Settings page, type File History in the text box, and click File History, as illustrated in Figure A. Figure A Accessing Windows 8's File History from the Start screen is easy. Turning on File History Once the screen appears, as shown in Figure B, you'll see that by default File History is turned off, but that the external hard disk is recognized as the storage location. (If your external hard disk doesn't show up, you'll need to make sure that it is connected.) Figure B By default, File History is turned off. If you enable Shadow Copies of Shared Folders on a volume using the default values, tasks will be scheduled to create shadow copies at 7:00 A.M. In Windows 8 the Shadow Volume Copy service has been replaced with the File History feature. Under the covers the same technology is being used to perform the copying. To begin using File History, click the Turn on button. As soon as you do, File History begins making copies of all the files in your Libraries (Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos), as well as files in Contacts, Favorites, and on your Desktop, as shown in Figure C. It will not allow you to select folders in other locations - if you have other files that you want File History to keep track of, you can add them to one of your existing libraries or you can create a new library. Figure C Once you turn it on, File History begins saving copies of all the files in Libraries, Contacts, Favorites, and the Desktop. As soon as File History is done backing up your files, it displays a date and time stamp, as shown in Figure D, so you'll know how current the backup is. You'll also see how much disk space is still available. If at any time you want to manually create a backup, you can click the Run now link. Figure D When File History is done with the initial backup, you'll see a date and time stamp. Homegroup sharing Now, if your Windows 8 system is connected to a Homegroup, you'll be prompted to recommend this backup drive to members of the Homegroup, as shown in Figure E, so they too can use it to run File History. Figure E Other members of a Homegroup will be able to use this backup drive to run File History. Once you recommend the backup drive to members of the Homegroup, the drive will automatically appear as the storage location when File History is run on a member system, as shown in Figure F. As you can see in this example, when I ran File History on JOVIAN-8, the backup location is automatically listed as a Local drive on OBERON-8. Figure F A backup drive recommended to the Homegroup will automatically appear in File History. Keep in mind that when you recommend this drive to members of the Homegroup, it is specifically made available via File History. In other words, you will not see the drive as a shared device in the Homegroup or in Network. While you won't see the drive in Network, you will find a new share called FileHistory#. Even though you can see and access the share, you shouldn't try to use it as a traditional share i.e. You should not copy, move, or delete files. If you do, chances are good that you will corrupt the File History management system. How it works Once you have File History up and running it is ready to begin protecting your data. By default, every hour File History will go to work and create backup copies of any file that has changed since the last backup. To do so, File History takes advantage of a feature of the NTFS file system, called the. Essentially, when any change is made to a file or folder on your hard disk, the change journal is updated with a description of the change and the name of the file or folder. So, in order to determine which files need to be backed up, File History simply consults the NTFS change journal, discovers which files or folders have changed, and backs them up. Using the change journal is fast and efficient and won't suck up tons of system resources like running a conventional backup routine does. File History has some other cool features up its sleeve as well. If the device configured as the backup location becomes unavailable, such as when a USB cable is disconnected or network goes down for maintenance, File History will continue to do its job by saving the copies to a cache on the local drive. Once the backup location becomes available again, the cached contents are transferred to the backup location and removed from the local drive. In addition, File History is sensitive to resource utilization. In other words, if File History is running and some other task needs the same system resources, File History will automatically back off and go into an idle state as it waits for the other task to finish before it resumes. File History is also aware of activity related to mobile computing such as running on AC or battery power or when the system goes into Sleep mode and will adjust accordingly so as not to interfere with power saving features. Changing Settings As I mentioned, File History will scan through the change journal every hour and back up changed files. However, you can change that frequency as well as adjust other settings. To do so, select the Advanced setting in the Task pane on the left side of the main window. You'll then see the Advanced Settings window, shown in Figure G, and can change the various settings. In the Versions section, you'll see the default settings but can change them to any of the available selections. For instance, you can set the Save copies of files setting, which is the frequency that File History will check for changes and make backups from 10 minutes to 24 hours. You can change the size of the offline cache from 5% to 20% of disk space, and you can change the length of time that File History will keep saved versions of changed files from one month to forever or until space is needed. Figure G From the Advanced Settings window, you can adjust several settings. After you have been using File History for an extended period of time, you may want to manually clean up File History's store. Select Clean up versions and use the File History Cleanup tool, shown in Figure H. Using the Delete files drop down allows you to select anywhere from older than one month to older than two years. Files and folders older than the selected age will be removed from the store leaving just the most recent versions. Figure H You can use the File History Cleanup tool to remove older versions. In the Homegroup section, you can enable or disable the sharing of the external drive for File History. If File History encounters any problems, it will create records in the File History event logs, which as you can see are easily accessible from the Advanced Settings window. Just click the link in the Event logs section and you will see Event Viewer, as shown in Figure I. Figure I If problems arise, File History will log them and you can then view them in Event Viewer. If you return to the main window and select Exclude folders, you can choose certain folders that you don't want File History to monitor. If you want to select a different backup device, you can choose Select drive and choose another external drive or a network location. Both these options are shown in Figure J. Figure J This composite image shows the Exclude Folders and Select Drive windows. Restoring files Of course the ultimate goal of File History is to be able to restore files that have been corrupted or inadvertently deleted. There are two ways that you can go about restoring files and you can either perform a full restore or simply restore individual files. The first way to initiate a restore operation is from the main File History window by selecting Restore personal files setting in the Task pane on the left. The other way is from Windows Explorer. Restoring from the main File History window will make a full restore easy while restoring from Windows Explorer will make restoring individual files easy. From Windows Explorer, you will go to the Home tab in the Open section and you'll see a History button, as shown in Figure K. Figure K You can launch a restore operation from within Windows Explorer. For the sake of showing a detailed example, let's suppose that you launch the restore operation from the File History window with the goal of restoring a single file. When you do, you'll see a window like the one shown in Figure L. Here you'll see all of the folders in the backup and can drill down to any folder containing the file or files that you want to restore. Figure L You can scroll through all of the available versions by using the Previous version and Next version buttons. At the top of the window, you'll see that this view is showing the most recent version of the File History backup - version 7 of 7 created on January 23, 2013 12:09 PM. Over to the left you can see the outline of the previous version. You can scroll through all of the available versions by using the Previous version and Next version buttons at the bottom of the screen. If you wanted to restore all of your files, like you would in the event of a hard disk failure, you would just click the green Restore button between the Previous version and Next version buttons. If you wanted to restore a particular version of the file, you would drill down to the folder and file and choose the correct version that you are looking for. Another handy feature of File History is that you can preview the file before you actually restore it. As you can imagine this take a lot out of the guess work out of finding the exact version that you are looking for. Once you have found the file version that you want to restore, select it and click the Restore button. When you do, you'll be prompted for the next step. In the case of a version you can either Replace the existing file with the copy from File History or Compare both files before deciding what to do. If you select Replace, you'll see the new copy operation progress dialog box complete with the graph. This process is illustrated in Figure M. When the operation is complete, the folder containing the new file will open. Figure M The restore operation is fairly straightforward. If the file that you want to restore has been inadvertently deleted from your hard disk, the restore will happen immediately since the destination no longer contains a duplicate file name. Now, if you wanted to preview a file before deciding if it is the one that you want to restore, just double click the file. If File History can provide a preview, it will be displayed right in the window, as shown in Figure N. If File History is unable to provide the preview, if will prompt you to launch the application associated with the file. Figure N If File History can do so, it will display a preview in its window. If from the Replace or Skip Files dialog box you selected Compare, you would see a window like the one shown in Figure O, which is titled File Conflict, and shows you the file's date and time stamp as well as the file's size. You would select the check box adjacent to the one that you want to keep and click Continue. Figure O You can compare files by date and time as well as size. What's your take? File History's user interface makes it easy to take advantage of this data protection tool. Will you use File History? Are you using File History? If so, what has been your experience? The beauty of the grounds and rich history of the campus make it a popular spot for weddings. The Arts Faculty building (first occupied in 1964) encompasses the New Fortune Theatre. This open-air venue is a replica of the original Elizabethan and has hosted regular performances of Shakespeare's plays co-produced by the Graduate Dramatic Society and the University Dramatic Society. The venue is also home to a family of donated to the University by the in 1975 after a gift. The, located on the ground floor of the Social Sciences Building, contains one of the world's finest collection of Aboriginal art, according to the Collections Australia Network (CAN). Its Asian and Melanesian collections are also of strong interest. Established in 1976 by Ronald and Catherine Berndt, it is planned to be incorporated in a purpose-built permanent structure, the Aboriginal Cultures Museum, which has been designed and is awaiting funding. The Cultural Precinct of the University is located in the Northern part of the Crawley campus. University Theatres - consisting of the Octogon, Dolphin and Somerville Auditorium - play host to a range of theatre and musical performances, and maintains a strong association with the. Just next door, the hosts hundreds of concerts each year by students and visiting artists, within the Callaway Auditorium and Eileen Joyce Studio, which also contains an internationally recognised collection of keyboard instruments. [ ] [ ] Libraries [ ]. Main article: The University of Western Australia features six main subject libraries on campus, including the architecturally recognised building, the largest library on campus with four publicly accessible levels. Four of the libraries such as the Reid Arts and Business Library, Law Library, Music Library and Science Library are located on the main campus, with the other two which are the Education, Fine Arts and Architecture (EDFAA) library and Medical and Dental Library being located within walking distance from the main campus. Residential colleges [ ] Residential colleges and additional student residential buildings located close to the campus include University Hall (formerly known as Currie Hall), St George's College, St Catherine's College, Trinity Residential College and St Thomas More College. St Catherine's College also offers short stays for non-student visitors. Offsite locations [ ]. UWA Centre Albany. The University established a in 1999 to meet rural education needs. In 2005, joined UWA in Albany to provide additional course offerings to the local rural community. UWA Albany offers postgraduate coursework and research programmes through the Institute for Regional Development and the Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management. The UWA Rural Clinical School provides year-long rural placements for fifth-year medical students in, Derby, Broome, Port Hedland, Karratha,, Bunbury, Narrogin, Esperance, and; Western Australia. Additionally, the University is involved in the Combined Universities Centre for Rural Health in. The University has further facilities across Stirling Highway in, linked by pedestrian underpasses beneath the highway, and paths in front of the residential colleges. Although not directly contiguous with the main Crawley site, the University does own almost every parcel of land between them and has long term plans to expand the two sites towards each other. The University also has facilities in Claremont, purchased in 2005 from. The University prefers to refer to these facilities as 'UWA Claremont' and not as a campus. The University remains a single campus institution. UWA Claremont is approximately 5 km west of the main Crawley campus. Further west still, the University also has staff in central Claremont. Overseas, the University has strategic partnerships with institutions in and, where students study for The University of Western Australia qualifications, but does not operate these foreign institutions directly. The University has also developed a relationship with with whom it sends academic staff to conduct medical student teaching in,, and. There are two to four visits to each location per year. Academia [ ]. Irwin Street Building The University's degree structure has changed recently to further separate the undergraduate and postgraduate degrees available. Justification for this new system is due to its simplicity and effectiveness in outsiders understanding the system. It is the first university in Western Australia to have this new system. Students entering the University at an undergraduate level must choose a three-year bachelor's degree. The university offers a Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Commerce (BCom), Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Design (BDes). Bachelor of Philosophy [ ] The university also offers the (BPhil) course for high-achieving new students. This is a research intensive degree which takes four years instead of the usual three for the other bachelor's degrees. Students studying the course choose disciplines from any of the four bachelor's degrees. Places are very limited with on average only about 30 places offered to students each year. Thus there is a lot of competition for places and the cut-off is very high. Assured entry pathways [ ] High school graduates with high academic achievement are able to apply for 'assured pathways'. This means they are assured a place in the postgraduate degree for their chosen discipline while they complete their undergraduate degree. Assured pathways are offered for studies in fields such as medicine, law, dentistry and engineering. Prospective students may apply for an assured pathway through the Bachelor of Philosophy. The assured pathways to Dentistry via the Bachelor of Philosophy is the most difficult undergraduate and postgraduate pathway to obtain from the University. Only one place is offered each year. Postgraduate courses [ ] Postgraduate study is offered previous-study-related disciplines and in professional disciplines that do not require previous tertiary study in that area, such as medicine, nursing, law and dentistry. Masters, PhDs, other doctorates, and other postgraduate coursework are offered to students who meet the academic requirements for undergraduate degrees in the same study area. Examples of this include postgraduate degrees in engineering, computer science and information technology, architecture, and research degrees and doctorates in biology. Students from other universities may transfer to UWA based on their GPA to undertake postgraduate study. Occasionally, undergraduate students may transfer to the university, based also on their GPA, to complete the degree they have already begun at another tertiary institution. Students [ ] UWA's student body is generally dominated by school-leavers from within Western Australia, mostly from the Perth metropolitan area. There are comparatively smaller numbers of mature-age students. In recent years, numbers of full-fee-paying foreign students, predominantly from South East Asia, have grown as a proportion of the student population. In 2013, the university had 4,952 international student enrolments in a total student body of under 25,000. The foyer of the multimillion-dollar Chemical and Molecular Sciences building, featuring the ' Academic profile [ ] The University recently attracted more competitive research funding than any other Western Australian university. Annually the University receives in excess of $71 million of external research income, expends over $117 million on research and graduates over 300 higher degree by research students, mostly doctorates. The University has over 80 research institutes and centres, including the Oceans Institute, the Centre for Energy, the Energy and Minerals Institute and the Centre for Software Practice. A recently announced project is the Zadko Telescope. A local businessman, James Zadko, and his family contributed funds for the purchase of a robotically controlled 1-metre modified (F/4 equatorially mounted flat field). The telescope will be co-located with the UWA's Gravity Discovery Centre and Southern Cross Cosmos Centre 70 km north of on Wallingup Plain near the town of. Its operation will be harmonised with detection of major supernova events by some of the 's. The University of Western Australia has also recently welcomed the State Government announcement of a $20 million international radio astronomy research centre on UWA's Perth campus. UWA is driving Australia's bid to be the site of the, a very large internationally funded radio astronomy installation capable of seeing the early stages of the formation of galaxies, stars and planets. Rankings [ ] World 93= World 111 World 91 World 95= World 252 Australian rankings National 7 National 6 National 6 National 7 National 14 National 27 UWA is highly ranked according to the Index ranking of Australian universities. By early 2010, UWA's Second Life project was more active than that of any other Australian university. The UWA site spans three islands (projected to expand), featuring several models of historic buildings from the Crawley campus, a virtual lecture hall which is used to run real lectures, and a facility where the capabilities of Second Life are being explored for use in scientific visualisation research. During 2009-2010, UWA in Second Life is running a monthly art contest, attracting around 70 artists and many visitors from around the world; every month, a new set of artworks are submitted, and the community, together with a judging panel, select winners in a number of categories, who are then awarded cash prizes. Distracting Rexes: You cannot kill T. Rexes when you are a human. The one exception is the smaller version of a Rex in The Cave mission. Other than that, all your guns and spears can do is distract the Rex to come after you instead of your comrades. In most missions you must have the Rex come after you so that your comrades can open a door or complete an objective of some sort. Do not waste all your ammunition on a Rex. A few rounds of fire should be enough to distract it. High contrast filter option: Get a 100 game completion. Killing smaller dinosaurs: Use the following trick to kill a smaller dinosaur, such as the Velociraptor, easily. Throw a spear directly in its neck or head. Note: The spear does not need to be on fire. Killing V-Rex as Kong: It may be difficult to get some time when the Rexes are not attacking you. However, the very first time you fight the Rexes, there is a ledge which you can climb onto so they cannot attack. However, once you are up there, you will be attacked by the flying dinosaurs. They are easy to defeat. Once you are up there, go into fury mode by repeatedly tapping Y until he smacks the ground. Once in fury mode, attack the Rexes one at a time. After you have hit one of them three times with A, they will be temporarily knocked out. You can then perform a finishing move by repeatedly tapping B or A. If done correctly, Kong will snap the Rex's jaw in two or throw it. As 2 writes are required, it could be important, where it takes place, because it takes some resources. (At LUN level in the storage box or at AIX level). The other point is if the 2 disks are in the same storage box and something happens with that box, then your VG will be affected. My personal opinion, if you have a critical system then 2 disks from different storage boxes and mirroring it at AIX level could help you to avoid problems with a storage box. Activating and Mounting the Original Logical Volume. Since you had to deactivate the logical volume mylv, you need to activate it again before you can mount it. Removing a volume group Make sure that no logical volumes are present in the volume group, see later section for how to do this. How to activate and deactivate Logical volumes, Volume group and Physical volume. I need to activate and deactivate the Logical volume, Physical Volume and Volume. (It needs some additional resources at CPU/Disk level, but if it is a critical system it does not matter.) Hope this help, Balazs. Hi Manoj, 'why there are minimum three VGDA in a VG?' I don't know where did you hear this data, but this is not true! VGDA contains full info of the entire VG. VG with 1 disk: Disk contains 2 copies of the VGDA (altogether 2 VGDAs) VG with 2 disks: 1 disk contains 2 copies of the VGDA, the other disk contains 1 copy (altogether 3 VGDAs) VG with 3 or more disks: each disk has 1 VGDA (altogether VGDA count is the same as the number of disks in VG) The reason why 3 VGDAs are in VGs with 2 disks, is the quorum. ![]() ![]() Ouorum needs 51% or more to activate a VG. If we are losing the disk with 2 VGDAs VG will not be varied on, otherwise varyon is possible. 'what is the location of LVCB?' First 512 byte of each logical volume in normal VGs (In big VGs it moved partially into the VGDA, and for scalable VGs completely.) 'if a LV is spread around two or more PV then what would be LVCB location?' Because first 512 byte of each LV is the LVCB, I think the first LP contains this info. (I never tested it, it is a guess.) Regards, Balazs. Anonymous on AIX system primary_node' and 'standby_node', I recently did the following: In vg_dba, which consists of hdiskpower1 and hdiskpower4, on primary_node: - use 'extendvg' to add hdiskpower15 to vg_dba - use 'migratepv' to move contents of hdiskpower4 to hdiskpower15 - use 'reducevg' to remove hdiskpower4 from vg_dba This all worked, but since then there has been an inconsistency between 'primary_node' and 'standby_node' because 'standby_node' doesn't know about the changes to 'vg_dba'. * On 'primary_node' # lspv| grep vg_dba hdiskpower15 00cbd242cfca60af vg_dba active hdiskpower1 00cbd2427c71644d vg_dba active * On 'standby_node' # lspv| grep vg_dba hdisk8 00cbd2427c687ce7 vg_dba hdisk38 00cbd2427c687ce7 vg_dba hdiskpower1 00cbd2427c71644d vg_dba 'hdisk8' and 'hdisk38' were in 'hdiskpower4', which has been removed from both nodes. 2 questions: 1. What must I do to correct the configuration on 'standby_node'? ![]() ![]() Is there any way to make the correction without taking the cluster down? I suppose you are using HACMP cluster. In this case, you should use always 'smitty hacmp'. If you do these in smitty then everything will be done autmatically. What you cn do: -make hdiskpower15 known by standby node as well (cfgmgr, you should see hdiskpower15 there too) - smitty hacmp -> c-spoc -> HACMP Logica Volume Management -> Synchronize a Shared Volume Group Definition If that does not work, generally you can do: - on primary: varyonvg -bun vg_dba - on standby: importvg -L vg_dba hdiskpower15 - on primary: varyonvg vg_dba But, be careful and look a deeper in this (google mor in this subject), as you can miss something what you did not write to me. All looks good in powermt and syminq commands. Is there a way to copy the vgda? Just to let you know, i don't have any disk free at the moment to add to this VG. Thanks for considering. Thanks for your immediate response, If the Node is in Cluster means do I need to request another 2 * 10GB LUNs to another cluster node as well. Example:If it is 2 node cluster and the cluster version is 6.1 means Do I need to do have Same LUN ID for the two cluster nodes or not required?? Do I need to do all the things like assign PVID to the newly configured LUNs, change the properties of the PV according to the old disks available in the VG and Increase the VG and Extend the Filesystem. Do I Need to do all the above things on the other node as well or will it affect automatically?? If it will effect automatically means upto where do I need to perform the things?? Please help to clarify the above doubts. Thanks to all. Hello Balazs, I have a query. I want to copy oracle data installed and configured on old box to new box. The steps that I can think is given below; 1- Mirrored the new SAN Lun's with pre-existing SAN Lun's at storage level for oracle mount points. 2- Once the mirroring complete then break the mirror among the Lun's at storage level. 3- Map and Scanned the mirrored Lun's on new box. 4- Mount the oracle file system with new Lun's. 5- Test DB connectivity etc. Please suggest the commands if the above steps are correct or suggest the best possible way to copy without going for downtime of DB's on old box and not putting any load on network. R'gs Prasoon. Anonymous Hi Balazs. I have an lv that I need to expand for a project, but no other pvs free to do it. As I see it there is some room left on the current pv, but don't know if it's possible to use remaining free PPs. Please check this link: at mirror write consistency section. Because mirroring just allocating the necessary Physical Partitions, but actual updated information will be written by synchronization. Please read the manual of extendvg 4. All necessary info for LVM (VG name, VG ID, PV ID. And its relations) are stored in ODM (and in VGDA as well). Depending on the command, it will refer to ODM for correct output. A computing device adapted to play a computer game, the device including a processor, a memory, a display, a touch screen or a cursor based input device, and computer code stored in device memory or on a remote server and executable by the device processor or a remote processor, and in which the computer code generates computer game graphics for the display on the device, showing a gameboard with multiple game elements that are removed when matched or switched by a player, such as in a match-3, clicker or switcher game. A METHOD FOR IMPLEMENTING A COMPUTER GAME BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention The invention relates to casual social games. Technical Background There are multiple technical challenges facing the designer of computer-implemented games to create a fun and compelling game. Three of these challenges can be broadly categorised into the following areas: 'engagement'; 'viralisation' and 'monetisation'. We will look first at 'engagement', which involves designing gameplay to be engaging and rewarding to players. This typically requires games to be easily understood at their simplest or introductory levels, providing rewarding gameplay with quite simple game mechanics, but becoming progressively more challenging so that players are not bored, but remain engaged and develop rewarding skills. Effective engagement requires various forms of feedback to reinforce players' sense of success and accomplishment. Effective engagement can be greatly magnified if the game has as social aspect - for example if it is linked to a social network so that game players can interact with their friends in the social network. The game can then transform into something that goes far beyond a solo game experience and become more like a shared journey. 'Viralisation' requires a game to include various techniques that encourage players to share the game with others, encouraging them to play the game. It is a key technique in enabling mass-scale distribution or penetration of games. Viralisation can be especially effective when the game is integrated into or connected to a social network environment in some manner, so that the game can then propagate through the network of player's friends, and their friends and so on. 'Monetisation' covers those techniques that enable revenue to be generated from a game; this involves many challenges, because the monetisation techniques need to be acceptable to players and in no way undermine engagement. A 'match-3 game' is a type of casual puzzle game where the player is required to find patterns on a seemingly chaotic board. The player then has to match three or more of the same type of game element on the game board and those matched elements will then disappear. One variant of casual games are the so called 'clicker' games where the player can click on a group of adjacent game elements of a certain type and those will then be removed. Some clicker games only require two adjacent objects to remove those elements if clicked by the user. Another type of match-3 games are the so called 'switcher' games where the player switches place on two adjacent game elements on the game board so that one or both of them create a chain of at least three adjacent game elements of the same type. Those matched game elements will then disappear. In a typical switcher game the game board will be repopulated with game objects from the top of the board with the physics of the game board being that the game pieces are falling downwards on the board. Another type of match-3 game are the so called 'shooter' games where the player launches for instance a ball or bubble on to the game board tying to aim at groups of similar game elements already on the game board. If the launched ball hits or forms a group of more than 3 similar game elements then that group of game elements are removed fro the game board. In a typical shooter game the physics of the game board being that the game pieces are falling downwards on the board. There are also other types of games where groups of certain game elements are combined together and removed when they have reached a certain size. The user can connect the groups with a swiping movement touching each of the connecting elements in one implementation and in another implementation the groups are formed to one group when the elements of the same type are adjacent, the player then removes the group for instance by clicking on that group. No express or implied license under any copyright whatsoever is therefore granted. Discussion of Related Art Casual social games have been implemented before and are known. However previous inventions have not successfully devised effective solutions to one or more of engagement, viralisation and monetisation in the same way as the present invention does. Buy Boosters game choices Win pop-up (post-game ) Score - highscore Task completed Level score Friend highscore Friend beaten Share Level score Friend highscore 1 star score 2 star score 3 star score Fail pop-up (post game ) Score Target failed Friends highscore Level score Replay Exit ( back to map ) 4th fail pop-up Buy Continue Exit ( back to map ) Pre-Game Banner Description The pre game banner is the banner that is displayed when the level just starts. It repeats the targets of the level just before the level is started. Banner of Score Mode level Start a score mode level Behaviour: The banner is displayed and then removed before the user can start the game. The banner displays all targets. A sound effect is played when the banner is moved in and another is played when it is moved out. Banner of Tutorial level Start a level that has a tutorial Behaviour: The banner is displayed, and when it is removed the tutorial starts. The tutorial must not start before the banner is removed. The banner displays all targets. A sound effect is played when the banner is moved in and another is played when it is moved out. Banner of level that scrolls Start a level that scrolls, typically a pet rescue level that is longer than one screen (9 rows) Behaviour: The banner is displayed when the scroll reach the top of the level, then the banner is removed and the game starts. A sound effect is played when the banner is moved in and another is played when it is moved out. Banner of a level with just one target Start a level with just one target Behaviour: The banner is displayed and it just displays one target. A sound effect is played when the banner is moved in and another is played when it is moved out. Alternative implementation The ideas described herein can be implemented in various ways and include different features. We will now look at an alternative implementation and it is understood that the features above and below can be combined. The following describes an implementation using a 'clicker' mechanic where groups of 2 or more objects (referred to in this document as blocks, bricks or elements) are selected and automatically removed. Figure 13 shows an example of a clicker game where one group of two game elements of the same kind is highlighted, meaning that this group can be clicked and removed. The following sections will refer to a game with a clicker mechanic. The ideas explained may also implemented for games with other mechanics. The game can in different implementations provide rewards for good gameplay. This can be in the form of a special game element that preforms a certain function. These special game elements can remove all visible blocks of one colour, all visible blocks in one column or in one row. One example of one such special game element is the bomb described in the implementation below. There are different implementations on how to activate these special game elements. They can for instance be activated based on time, that they are included in a group of game elements that are removed or they can be activated by the player. The special game elements can in certain implementations be bought or selected before the game is started and then used in the game when the player so wishes. Game goals The aim of the game is to remove as much of the building as possible within the allotted time by clicking groups of blocks of the same colour. Once removed, any blocks above the cleared combination fall down to fill the gaps created. A beam rests on top of the structure and falls down when the last block supporting it is cleared. The beam then crushes certain number of blocks as it is falling. The number of blocks crushed is determined by the height of the fall. The implementation of how many levels the beam can crush can vary. You complete the game by reaching the ground before the time is up. If any blocks are left in the building when time runs out, you will not get any completion bonuses. The game plays like a classic clicker where the player aims to remove as many 'floors' of the playing field (for instance 9x9) structure as possible before time runs out by clicking on coloured variations of blocks in combinations of two or more. The game can have different number of colours available throughout the game. Having 4 or 5 different colours creates a certain flow of the game play. Once removed, any blocks above the cleared combination fall down to fill the gaps created by the removed blocks. However, only combos within the visible playing field may be cleared. The player can in an alternative implementation scroll the screen downwards and continue clearing the blocks. As the blocks in the supporting top floor are removed, the steel beam falls down, and the higher the fall, the more floors will get crushed before the beam comes to a stop. In an implementation it is enough with one supporting block to hold up the beam, irrespective of where on the beam it is supported as exemplified in Figure 14. However, by collecting 'characters' (in an exemplary implementation in the form of birds) along the way, the beam is able to remain in mid-air as shown in Figure 15. Since each character is able to keep the beam aloft for a certain amount of time, the more characters are added, the longer before the beam falls down, giving the player time to remove more blocks in preparation for the subsequent fall. The characters supporting the beam can be collected after having removed certain number of floors in the structure. The characters can in alternative embodiments be added by good gameplay such as a consecutive number of combinations within a limited time or without clicking on an alone block. By clicking a certain number of consecutive combos within a certain amount of time of each other, it is possible to enter bonus modes which temporarily removes colours and thereby increases game flow. Added as helpers, the main characters appear at randomly regular intervals on a telephone pole scrolling along the playing field on the left side of the screen. As the characters scroll past a certain point, the sleeping characters wake up and join the crew on top of the beam. Once there, they enable hang time for the beam at one second per character to give the player more time to prepare the building for the ensuing fall. Added as boosters, bomb blocks appear at regular intervals randomly placed throughout the playing field. Clicking a bomb block immediately causes it to detonate and clear all other regular blocks, regardless of colour, within a 2-block radius, see Figure 16. However, letting the beam crush the bomb will cause a line blast to clear all regular blocks on the same row. The bomb may in some instances be detonated with game elements still undestroyed in the area above the bomb detonation. These still intact game elements may fall down to fill up the area below. Figure 17 shows one implementation of the detonation area when a bomb block has been clicked. Figure 18 shows when game elements above the detonation area of the bomb block in Figure 17 have fallen down. In case there are no more moves to be made in the visible screen (i.e. All visible blocks connect only to blocks of another colour), an informational text will appear to underline this fact, while a 'wrecking ball' clears the screen from blocks, allowing the beam to fall and enable further play. Since the game is both time- and level based, the final result is decided upon different parameters depending on the final outcome of the session. The beam When you have cleared all blocks in the supporting top floor, the overlying beam falls down. The higher the fall, the more floors will get crushed before the beam comes to a stop. When you collect birds along the way, the beam will be kept in mid-air as it loses support. Each bird adds a certain amount of time (for instance one second) of hang time, so the more birds are added, the longer before the beam falls down. This offers time for you to remove more blocks to extend the subsequent fall. The number of blocks the beam can crush can be capped. This limit can be based on the total number of blocks it crushes or the number of floors it falls through. In one implementation the characters supporting the beam can fall off if the beam is only supported with one block as exemplified in Figure 19. This feature can be implemented with a time delay so that the player can balance the beam back and forth to keep the characters on the beam. This can be implemented so that the time it takes for the beam to rock far enough for the characters to fall off, differs depending on how far out to one side the single supporting block is. Bonus mode To start the bonus mode, you need to create consecutive combos quickly. When you enter the first bonus mode by creating nine successful combos within one second of each other, one colour will then be removed. To remove another colour, you need to enter the second bonus mode by creating another nine successful combos within one second of each other. Breaking a window by clicking a single block will reset the bonus counter. Game controls You control the game with your mouse. Click groups of blocks of the same colour to remove them. Bombs are blown up by either clicking them or crushing them with the beam. To make the beam fall, simply remove all blocks supporting it. Birds are collected by simply passing them with the beam. If you wish to end the game prematurely, simply press End Game at the bottom right of the screen. You can also toggle the sound and music On or Off separately. Game scoring Combos You get points for each combo you make. The bigger the combo, the larger the score. 2 blocks: 400 points 3 blocks: 900 points 4 blocks: 1600 points.and so on using this formula: number of blocks x number of blocks x 100 Bombs You get points for each bomb you detonate. You get different scores depending on how they detonate: Bomb detonated by your click: number of blocks x number of blocks x 50 Bomb detonated by the beam: number of blocks x number of blocks x 100 Beam You get regular combo points for all blocks you crush with the beam. A multiplier is applied to those scores, increasing by O.lx for every floor you pass until it reaches a cap at 2. Time You get points for reaching the ground depending on the amount of time left. The base score for the time bonus is 100,000 points, and any time left when reaching the ground translates into a percentage of this.
